The questions worth asking first

If a question isn't covered here, ask it on the phone; Salt Lake Valley Concrete will answer it properly.

What types of concrete work do you do?

We handle driveways, patios, sidewalks, slabs, decorative stamped and stained finishes, and repairs to existing concrete. If you need concrete done around your home or property, we do it.

Do you work year-round?

We pour and finish concrete in spring through fall when weather permits. Winter conditions make curing difficult, so we plan major pours during the warmer months. If you need urgent repairs, call and we'll assess what's possible.

How much does concrete work cost?

Cost depends on the size, thickness, finish, and site conditions. A simple driveway costs less than decorative stamped work. We provide a written estimate after a site visit so you know the price before we start.

How long does a new driveway take?

It depends on the size of the driveway, the base work and the weather. Prep and the pour are scheduled separately, and the concrete needs time to cure before it is ready for cars. We give you a timeline specific to your site.

What makes a driveway last longer in Utah?

Good drainage, proper thickness, and a sound base prevent freeze-thaw damage and cracking. We build those foundations and advise on maintenance so your driveway holds up through the seasons.

Can you fix cracks in my old driveway?

Yes. Small cracks we seal, larger ones may need saw-cut repair or resurfacing depending on how much of the driveway is damaged. We'll show you what works for your situation.

Can you add color or a pattern to my patio?

Yes. We offer stamped patterns, stained finishes, and colored concrete to match your home and style. The design stays intact for years with proper sealing and care.

What's the difference between a basic patio and stamped concrete?

Basic concrete is smooth and clean. Stamped concrete gets a decorative texture or pattern pressed into it before it sets, giving it more visual interest and often a higher-end look.

How do I keep my patio looking good?

Sealing the surface every few years helps preserve color and protect against stains and weather. We recommend a sealer and can advise on the best schedule for your climate and use.

Why do my sidewalk and driveway crack and heave?

Freeze-thaw cycles, poor drainage, and soft subgrades cause concrete to move and break. We build proper bases and manage water runoff to reduce heaving and cracking.

What's the cost difference between repairing and replacing a sidewalk?

Small repairs cost less than full replacement. If the damage is widespread or poses a trip hazard, replacement is often the safer, longer-lasting choice. We'll recommend what makes sense for your walk.

Do you handle ADA-compliant ramps?

Yes. We build ramps and transitions that meet accessibility standards so all visitors can safely enter your property.

What is flatwork and when do I need it?

Flatwork is any poured concrete surface: slabs under sheds, parking areas, equipment pads, or warehouse floors. You need it whenever you want a durable, level surface.

How flat does the concrete need to be?

That depends on its use. A garage slab needs light flatness to shed water, but a commercial floor may need tighter tolerances. We build to the standard your use requires.

How do you prevent a slab from cracking?

Good base prep, proper thickness, control joints cut at the right spacing, and proper curing all reduce cracking. We handle each step carefully to minimize defects.

How is stamped concrete different from regular concrete?

Stamped concrete has a decorative pattern pressed into it before it cures, creating texture and visual interest. It costs more than smooth concrete but adds style and can increase home appeal.

Will stamped concrete crack like regular concrete?

Stamped concrete can crack from settling or freeze-thaw movement, just like regular concrete. Good base prep, proper thickness, and sealing reduce cracking. Cracks in stamped finishes can be sealed to blend them.

What colors and patterns are available?

Hundreds of stamped patterns exist—slate, brick, stone, tile—and we can stain concrete in many colors. We'll show you samples so you pick a look that fits your home.

What preparation is needed before pouring a slab?

We excavate, compact the subgrade, set up proper drainage, build the forms, and place reinforcement. This foundation work is what keeps the slab from settling and cracking.

How thick should a slab be?

Thickness depends on use: a garden shed slab might be 4 inches, a driveway 4 to 5 inches, a foundation or heavy-load area may need more. We size it for what you're building.

Can you pour a slab on a sloped or uneven lot?

Yes. We build proper bases and set the slab to shed water while keeping it level enough for its purpose. Sloped sites require good drainage planning.

When is repair better than replacement?

If damage is isolated—a few cracks or a small sunken area—repair is faster and cheaper. If the slab is sinking overall, cracking throughout, or no longer safe, resurfacing or replacement is the better choice.

What is resurfacing and how long does it last?

Resurfacing applies a new concrete layer over the old slab. A resurfaced slab lasts many years if the base is solid and water drains well. Poor drainage underneath can cause early failure.

Can you fix a sunken or heaved concrete slab?

Minor heaves and settled edges can be ground down or resurfaced. Large settlement or heave usually means replacing that section. We assess what your slab needs and show you the best fix.

Why do I need to repair cracks in my concrete?

Cracks let water seep in, which freezes in winter and widens the crack. Sealing stops that cycle and prevents larger damage. Untreated cracks get worse over time.

What's the difference between sealing and injection?

Sealing fills a surface crack with material. Injection uses pressure to drive repair material deep into the crack. The method depends on the crack's depth, age, and what you want the repair to handle.

Can you permanently fix a crack?

We can seal or repair a crack so it stops leaking and spreading. If the cause—settlement, poor drainage, or structural movement—isn't fixed, new cracks may form nearby.

How does concrete stain differ from paint?

Stain soaks into the concrete and becomes part of it, so it doesn't peel or chip. Paint sits on top and can wear off. Stain lasts longer and looks more natural.

Can you stain old, existing concrete?

Yes, if the surface is clean and in decent condition. Heavily sealed or painted concrete may need prep work. We assess the condition and advise if staining will work.

Will the color fade in Utah's sun?

Quality stain and sealer resist fading better than paint, but all colors will lighten some over years in intense sunlight. We use products rated for outdoor durability and recommend resealing every few years to keep color rich.
